SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES: SCIENCE & SOLUTIONS

BREAKOUT SESSIONS & WORKSHOPS

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7,  200
9:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
Renaissance Washington DC Hotel
999 Ninth Street, NW

GENERAL INFORMATION  |  LIST OF BREAKOUT SESSIONS  |  DRAFT RECOMMENDATIONS

The morning of the second day of the conference will include a variety of breakout sessions and workshops, each focusing on a particular theme or topic. Each session is three hours (9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.) long and will be interactive, with a full discussion following the opening presentation.

The purpose of these sessions are twofold. First, they will allow conference attendees to explore the use of science for sustainable communities in greater depth. Second, they will allow attendees to participate in formulating science and policy recommendations for presentation at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) via the U.S. National Position Paper and the UN Preparatory Meetings leading to WSSD. The final product of the breakout sessions and workshops will be a report outlining the recommendations, similar to last year's report Recommendations for Improving the Scientific Basis of Environmental Decisionmaking.

NCSE organizes the sessions relating to the conference's three plenary case studies (Curitiba, Brazil; Portland, Oregon; and Working for Water, South Africa). NCSE requested proposals for breakout sessions and provided a list that covered a wide variety of potential topics. After all the proposals were submitted, NCSE decided on the following sessions. NCSE thanks all of those who took the time to organize a session and submit a proposal!
