Program Coordinator, University Membership and Development

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) is a not-for-profit organization located in Washington, DC, which works to improve the scientific basis of environmental decisionmaking.  The organization specializes in programs that bring together diverse institutions, communities, and individuals.

NCSE operates programs in five strategic areas: providing science solutions; strengthening education and supporting the advancement of environmental programs on the nation's campuses; organizing the National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment; communicating science-based information to decision makers and the public; and advancing science policy at the national level. The Program Coordinator will work on membership activities of NCSE’s University Affiliate Program and support the development activities of the organization.  The University Program provides services to advance environmental programs at 150 member universities and colleges across the U.S., ranging from large universities to small liberal arts colleges. The Program Coordinator will support the Executive Director and the Director of Development on overall fundraising activities for NCSE’s programs, including working with foundations, federal agencies, and individual donors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the day-to-day membership functions of NCSE’s University Affiliate Program, including membership records and database management.
  • Support the Director of Development and University Relations in all aspects of the annual university membership campaign.
  • Interact with new and prospective colleges and universities and their faculty regarding NCSE and its program activities and services.
  • Conduct foundation research and assist the Director of Development with grant proposals.
  • Help organize public relations/fundraising trips for the Executive Director with organizations, universities, and funders in selected cities.
  • Work with the Executive Director and Development Director to cultivate and maintain relationships with individual donors.
  • Assist senior staff on securing sponsorships for NCSE’s National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment.
  • Maintain and update donor contribution records and sponsorship records for national conference.
  • Draft acknowledgement letters to universities and donors.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with 2 plus years experience with a nonprofit organization, preferably working in an environmentally-related area. Development and/or membership experience desired.

The position requires strong organizational and administrative skills, excellent written and communication skills, proficient computer skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines. Salary range $32,000 to $36,000, commensurate with experience.

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) offers internships for students and recent graduates throughout the year. Preference is given to students or graduates of the NCSE's  University Affiliate  institutions.  “Semester in Washington” students are encouraged to apply but they will not receive a stipend but will earn credit.  Please find application instructions at the bottom of the page. All interns will gain a diverse experience during their tenure at NCSE, engaging in a variety of programs, projects and general office tasks.  Interns may assist in outreach to the academic, governmental, business, and civil communities.  Opportunities made available to interns include attending briefings, seminars and conferences -- all important networking opportunities in DC and on Capitol Hill.

Responsibilities may include working on any number of our programs:
Education and CareersScience SolutionsAnnual ConferenceEarth Portal Science Policy .  Additionally, interns will work with general management of the NCSE to maintain website design, electronic outreach, databases management, LAN support, web research, and content evaluation.  Strong candidates will be particularly interested in working on fundraising and development issues. 

Duration:
Internships usually last for 3 months with an opportunity for extension and promotion.
40 hours per week; Monday – Friday.
